Curatorial Statement
Where the Birds AR, an innovative ink art exhibition by contemporary artist TK Chan, which beautifully fuses traditional Chinese ink painting with cutting-edge augmented reality (AR) technology. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the vibrant world of migratory birds and the fragile ecosystems they inhabit, offering a unique blend of artistic beauty, technological innovation, and environmental consciousness. Inspired by Hong Kong's wetlands, home to over 550 migratory bird species, this exhibition highlights the fragility of these vital ecosystems, which are increasingly threatened by urbanization. Through TK Chan’s study on the habitat, form and characteristics of birds, she documented our winged feathery friends in her signature contemporary ink style. With each painting being a story of love, she captures the grace and vitality of these birds, transforming them into compelling symbols of freedom and interconnectedness. Through her unique artistic lens, Chan underscores the ecological significance of these delicate ecosystems, inviting viewers to confront the urgent threats posed by urbanization and to recognize the importance of preserving these vital habitats for future generations. Stressing an importance to keep distance with nature in the name of conservation, Where the Birds AR examines the interspace between mankind and wildlife. Through art and technology, the exhibition shortens this distance, opening a possibility to appreciate nature up close without disturbing or interfering. Visitors can engage with the artworks through their smartphones or Vision Pro devices, bringing the birds to life in a dynamic and interactive experience that bridges the gap between art, nature, and technology. This project was made possible through the support of the 'Young Arts Tech Talents Residency Scheme' by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, fostering innovation and creativity in the realm of art and technology.
